Why the CSA Screening
Gives You a Deeper Look Into
Your Heart and Arteries

Every year, thousands of Australians suffer heart attacks or strokes, even after being told their blood pressure and cholesterol levels were “fine.” In fact, up to 50% of people who experience a major cardiovascular event had no prior warning signs based on traditional risk factors like cholesterol. That’s why it’s time to rethink what it means to understand your heart health.
At CSA (CardiAction Screening Australia), we offer a non-invasive, science-backed screening service that provides instant insights into how your heart and arteries are functioning, not just your risk factors.

Heart Screening

A New Way to Look at Heart and Artery Health

The free GP Heart Health Check is a great step and includes:

GP Heart Health Check
Blood pressure (brachial only)
GP Heart Health Check
Cholesterol and blood sugar levels
20-minute Heart and Artery Health Check
Lifestyle and family history assessment
Non-invasive heart and artery health check
A calculated 5-year risk score using the Australian absolute CVD risk calculator

But it has limits. It doesn’t assess how your arteries are functioning, how stiff they are, or how efficiently your heart is delivering oxygen-rich blood to your body. It also doesn’t assess central blood pressure, the pressure to which your vital organs are actually exposed to.

“This is where CSA screening is different.”

What We Measure

Our screening service is quick, non-invasive, and utilises the science of the CardiAction platform, combined with TGA and FDA-approved technology. It measures things that most GPs can’t access in a standard consultation, including:

Central Systolic Pressure (cSP)

The pressure in your aorta that your vital organs are actually exposed to. High cSP can mean your heart and arteries are under more strain than standard blood pressure tests reveal.

Augmentation Index (AIx)

A key marker of arterial stiffness, which increases the workload on your heart.

Augmentation Pressure (AP)

Reflects the added strain on your heart from stiff arteries and wave reflections. It contributes to a more accurate understanding of cardiovascular stress than a standard blood pressure reading.

Heart Rate (HR)

The number of times your heart beats per minute. A resting heart rate that is too high or too low may indicate stress on your heart or nervous system

Ejection Duration (ED)

The time your heart spends pushing blood into your arteries with each beat. The shorter the duration time the the more efficent the heart is.

Brachial Blood Pressure (BP)

Still included, providing a comprehensive view

What makes this screening different is that it doesn’t just identify the presence of traditional risk factors, such as high cholesterol or a family history. It helps determine whether those risk factors are actively causing harm to your heart and arteries.
Measures like central systolic pressure (cSP) reflect the cumulative impact of risk factors on your vascular system. In other words, CSA assesses not just your risk, but the real-time effect that risk is having on your cardiovascular health.

  • Real-time data shows actual heart function

  • Lifestyle habits like smoking are visible

  • Medication effects are measured accurately

  • Insights go beyond basic questionnaires

These readings are captured using a medically validated device and interpreted by the CardiAction platform, which was developed by Australian researchers over a period of more than a decade. The platform incorporates peer-reviewed science and has been independently validated by leading Australian universities.

Why This Matters

Pharmacy cardiovascular risk screeningPharmacy cardiovascular risk screening
Even with normal cholesterol or brachial BP, your heart and arteries may be under strain. Stiffened arteries or impaired blood flow can go undetected in a standard GP check, but they’re often early signs of developing cardiovascular issues.
By picking up subtle signs earlier, you’re empowered to take proactive steps while things are still in your control.

CardiAction brings critical screening services to Indigenous populations and low socioeconomic groups, where access to traditional healthcare is often limited due to cultural, financial, or geographical barriers.

The screening is non-invasive and does not require blood tests, making it culturally appropriate and accessible to underserved populations.

This may include lifestyle adjustments, dietary changes, exercise, or, if necessary, a consultation with your GP or a specialist for further evaluation. Many of our customers tell us they were surprised to learn their arteries were under strain despite having “normal” blood pressure and even cholesterol levels.

Is This a Medical Test?

No. The CSA screening service is not a medical test, and it does not diagnose cardiovascular disease. It is a science-based screening service that helps you understand your heart and artery health in real-time, giving you the confidence to take action and follow up with a doctor if your results suggest an elevated risk.

There’s no need to fast or change your routine. Just arrive at your local participating pharmacy, and your screener will guide you through the 20-minute process.

What’s the Alternative?

The only other way to gain deeper insights into arterial health is through a CT Calcium Score and Coronary CT Angiography, which can cost hundreds of dollars, require a referral, and expose you to radiation. These are valuable diagnostic tools, but they are often used after symptoms appear or when a significant risk has already been identified.

Our goal is to help you take control earlier.

Lifestyle and the Bigger  Picture

Your heart and arteries are not isolated from the rest of your body. In fact, growing research shows that gut health, inflammation, and even how your cells produce energy can all affect cardiovascular performance, as highlighted by Dr Ross Walker, eminent practising Cardiologist in his Sydney Heart Health article “The Importance of good gut health: insights from recent research”.

For example, up to 70% of your immune system is located in your gut, and imbalances in gut bacteria can lead to chronic inflammation. This inflammation may increase arterial stiffness, contribute to high central blood pressure, and impact how well your heart muscle receives oxygen. These are all key indicators measured by CSA Screening.

Some researchers, including integrative cardiologists, have also highlighted how mitochondrial health (the way your cells produce and manage energy) may influence cardiovascular risk. Poor sleep, stress, infections such as COVID-19, and certain medications have been linked to reduced mitochondrial function. These effects can contribute to higher cardiovascular strain, which may be reflected in your CSA results.

Summary

Final Word

Your heart and arteries don’t wait for a crisis to let you know something’s wrong. By the time symptoms appear, the damage may already be done.

The CSA screening provides a clearer window into your cardiovascular health in a simple, non-invasive, and affordable way. It’s not about replacing your GP. It’s about working alongside your GP or other health professionals to support more informed conversations with better, earlier insights that help you stay one step ahead.
